Hello Em and Kristen, I crochet free-hand so I don’t remember how I did the leafs. But when I look at the images here it looks like I first crocheted a large leaf and then a small one while attaching it with stitches along the large leafs side. I’m sorry but it was to long ago.
I did a search at Ravlery and found this pattern http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ivy-klimop
It’s not mine but it looks very similar.
